Mission
Sustainable Shorelines is an organization established to seek and champion sustainable and environmentally sound methods of maintaining our coastal resources. This organization is to establish in the minds of our citizens that we can save our shorelines, protect vital habitats and maintain the economic engines these are for our coastal communities and our national economy.
Goals Our goals are to insure the public is aware of what constitutes our coastal resources, the benefits derived from these, the importance of protecting these and the need to do this in a manner enhancing these resources or with minimal impact to any one resource. To be sustainable, these resources must be managed equitably, effectively and efficiently by working with natural forces and materials. First, however, the public must be made aware of current, unsustainable policies and practices and the unnatural forces which influence these.
Ongoing research To do this, ongoing research is to be done by the staff of the organization. This research includes daily monitoring of news events, official announcements, scientific reports and other published data to document current happenings impacting our coastlines. That information deemed significant is to be archived in a growing data bank for rapid retrieval. This information then can be readily available to provide evidence of practices or policies which positively or negatively impact our coastal resources.
Daily data collection This daily data collection is to be mined for contacts who may wish to become a member of the organization, receive new and data from our work or may want to know of alternative methods of protecting our shorelines. These can be contacted through e-mail, letters or telephone calls to offer assistance or elicit support.
Reporting and advocacy Selected data posted to the Sustainable Shorelines website introduces visitors to the harm currently being done to our coastal resources and to provide a weekly "rogues gallery" of articles demonstrating this. More importantly, it will advocate for those methods, groups and/or policies dedicated to halting, mitigating, or reducing those harmful activities. We are to be linked to those sites for visitors ease of access. We also are to solicit support for our goals and further funding for expanding our influences through other means.
Media presence This organization intends to keep an active presence in the media through news releases and other media promotional methods. We should attempt to keep reporters of coastal issues aware of other reports which might be of interest to that reporter's readers. We must become a known entity with staying power such that our message is heard and heeded. We must, when possible, attend public hearings, meetings and other accessible events such that we can advocate for more rational policies. A relentless correspondence schedule should be maintained to document our contacts with public officials, other organizations and opponents.
We can save our shorelines and the coastal habitats and ecosystems these sustain.
